About The Breed

American Bulldogs are friendly, happy, very driven dogs with an assertiveness and confidence.  Great family, working and farm dogs.  American Bulldogs are protective and loving of children.  With proper training and socialization, you’ll find them outgoing and exceedingly loyal. Some American Bulldogs will go to great lengths to protect their family and property. American Bulldogs are working dogs that need to be active and accomplish tasks. Probably not the best small apartment dogs, but can excel in an inner- city environment with  proper exercise, they need daily walks, hikes, runs, room to run and lots of fresh air to maintain a healthy mind and body.

Being dominant dogs, American Bulldogs need either an experienced dog handler or a master who is the alpha dog with leadership and a calm confidence to let them know who’s in charge. These powerful dogs are often unaware of their own strength, but with proper training and human and K9 contact—especially at an early age—they will be just as friendly to other dogs and people as they are to their owners

History of a Working Dog

An older version of the American Bulldog originated in England and was used as a work dog catching cattle and guarding property until it became the breed of choice in a brutal sport known as bull baiting. The breed survived by working class immigrants from England who brought their working dogs with them to farm the Southern American Colonies. The American Bulldog has since become an American Icon.

By the end of World War II, the breed was almost extinct, however, a few determined breeders decided to revive the American Bulldog. John D. Johnson, a returning war veteran (the same lines that are a huge part of what we breed here at Walker's American Bulldogs) and Alan Scott began carefully breeding American Bulldogs after the war, keeping careful records of the breed’s health and working abilities.

Today American Bulldogs are used as catch dogs, farm dogs, in dog sports and showing. The American Bulldog continues as a great family dog with a loyalty and love for children second to none.
